Partisan actors should not lead the galamsey fight – Gyampo

Ransford Gyampo has issued a statement urging the government and society to adopt more radical measures against galamsey, while warning against the influence of partisan politics in the campaign.

Gyampo emphasized that his personal commitment to fighting illegal mining is longstanding and unwavering.

“Evidence abounds to show that I have never been silent on this matter,” he said, referencing past media appearances advocating for decisive interventions.

While recognizing current efforts, including forest reclamation operations and legal reforms by the NDC government, Gyampo stressed that more drastic steps are needed.

He voiced support for a potential state of emergency as a last resort, arguing that urgent action is necessary to prevent further destruction of Ghana’s environment.

At the same time, Gyampo criticized what he calls “self-perpetuating ignoramuses” and “hypocritical self-serving partisan agents” who have historically undermined efforts to tackle galamsey.

He pointed to alleged bribery and interference with labor unions, as well as the targeting of whistleblowers, as evidence of politically motivated obstruction.

The political scientist highlighted the need for credible, non-partisan leadership in the fight against galamsey.

“The call for more drastic action must be led by right-thinking people in society, not partisan rifraffs,” Gyampo noted, asserting that genuine advocacy groups should be at the forefront.

Gyampo concluded by underscoring his dual role as a government insider and civic advocate: shaping policy from within while continuing to push for stronger measures.

“I don’t like to fight, but I don’t hate to fight,” he said, signaling his readiness to respond to future provocations while keeping Ghana’s national interest as his priority.
