Linda Ocloo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister and Member of Parliament for the Shai-Osudoku Constituency delivered a critical assessment of her MMDCEs’ performance, emphasizing accountability as a central tenet of the government’s “Reset Agenda.” During a joint “Meet the Press” encounter, the Minister stated her dismay at the “level of inefficiency and complacency” observed among local authorities. “Excuses are nothing but an embarrassment to the people we serve,” she said, calling on MMDCEs to transition from enjoying office perks to delivering results.
The Minister’s address centered on three critical areas of concern: streetlights, sanitation, and regulatory enforcement. On the subject of streetlights, she provided an update on the progress of Phase I, noting that over 128 streets have been lit. She also announced the successful acquisition of 3,000 streetlights from the Ministry of Energy, with each MMDA receiving 100 units. She issued a non-negotiable two-week deadline for their installation, warning of severe consequences for non-compliance.
The sanitation situation was described as “unacceptable,” with the Minister directly accusing Assemblies of “sheer negligence” despite having the necessary resources. She condemned the failure to utilize the sanitation component of the DACF to recruit young people for cleanup exercises. The Minister declared that performance on sanitation would be under “the strictest monitoring” and warned that she would recommend the removal of non-performing Chief Executives.
Furthermore, Linda Ocloo addressed the issue of illegal billboards and the theft of drain covers, urging MMDCEs to demonstrate initiative rather than laziness. She also issued a stern warning about the conduct of some MMDCEs, highlighting an abuse of office where Personal Assistants are overstepping their authority and official spaces are being used for party activities. She banned MMDCEs from attending RCC meetings with their PAs.
The address also touched on environmental concerns, with the Minister announcing her intention to continue demolition exercises at the Ramsar site to protect wetlands. She also condemned the illegal filling of the Laloi Lagoon, labeling it an “assault on environmental sustainability.”
The Minister concluded by urging the public to support the region’s development by reporting issues and avoiding unlawful activities. She made it clear that “The people of this Region are tired of words, they want results, and they want them now.”
