Teachers welcome review of single spine salary system

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has thrown its support behind President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to review the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS), saying the system has long been plagued by unfair disparities.

At his media engagement on Wednesday, September 10, President Mahama acknowledged that the SSSS, introduced in 2010 to harmonise public sector pay, had failed to achieve its intended fairness and promised a comprehensive review.

Reacting to the pledge, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah said the announcement was overdue.

“How can you go to a university, do the same programme—meaning they have the same value—and yet, on the spine, the moment they come out, one is placed on level 18 and the other on 16? How do you explain this?” he asked.

“Since we are in the nation and working together, we need systems that reward people adequately and fairly.”

Musah added that teachers and other public servants had waited years for such reforms and expressed hope that the promised review would finally address the inequities within the pay structure.
