Transport operators threaten protest over deplorable Pokuase-Nsawam road

A coalition of commercial transport operators, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), has issued an ultimatum to the government to fix the deplorable Pokuase-Nsawam road immediately or face a nationwide protest.

In a press statement released on August 14, 2025, the transport operators called on the Minister for Roads and Highways to make the road a priority.

They condemned the current state of the stretch as “unmotorable” and a source of “extreme dangers” to all motorists, commuters, and residents in the area.

The coalition also highlighted the severe economic and operational challenges faced by its members.

“As commercial transport operators, we are grappling with high operational cost due to the bad nature of the road,” the statement read, detailing how the road’s condition necessitates frequent vehicle maintenance, constant changing of spare parts, and ultimately shortens the lifespan of their vehicles.

The operators explained that the situation extends far beyond their profession, impacting daily lives and economic activities for all motorists using the road. This includes those traveling to destinations in the Eastern, Ashanti, and other northern regions of the country.

The press statement revealed that the operators had previously engaged with the Minister for Roads and Highways, receiving an assurance that the situation would be remedied within six weeks.

However, that timeline has now elapsed, and the road remains in the same poor condition, much to their “chagrin.”

“We are therefore calling on the Hon. Minister of Roads and Highways to make it a priority and take immediate action to fix the Pokuase-Nsawam road to alleviate the plight of motorists, commuters and residents on the corridor,” the statement stressed.

The coalition has set a firm deadline for the government. They declared that “if no meaningful action is taken within one week, the GPRTU of TUC, GRTCC and other commercial transport operators will park our vehicles and embark on a protest against the Government till our concerns are addressed.“
