Two dead in Sowutuom as Homowo clash turns deadly

Gunfire shattered the Homowo celebrations in Sowutuom on Saturday, August 30, 2025, leaving two people feared dead and several others injured.

“After the Chelsea game, we suddenly heard gunshots from the junction. For almost 30 minutes, bullets were flying everywhere,” an eyewitness told JoyNews, describing scenes of panic as residents fled for safety.

Another recalled seeing “about five armed men storming the area, shooting left, right, center.”

According to residents, the violence was triggered when members of the Dwenewoho community attempted to sprinkle Kpokpoi — a traditional dish central to the festival — in Sowutuom.

Local traditional leaders reportedly opposed the move, sparking a confrontation that quickly escalated.

“The Sowutuom people insisted Dwenewoho couldn’t sprinkle here, but they refused to stop. That’s what started the fight,” one witness explained.

Among the dead are the Obrafor of Sowutuom and the son of the local chief, eyewitnesses said. The exact number of injured remains unclear, but several residents were caught in the crossfire.

Police were later deployed to restore calm, but tensions remain high. By Sunday, many shops in the area stayed closed as residents feared the clashes could flare up again.
