The U.S. Embassy in Ghana has extended its condolences to families affected by the tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

In a statement, the embassy said, “The U.S. Embassy offers its deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives during the November 12 recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra. Our thoughts are with the people of Ghana in this painful moment.”

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday morning during a recruitment exercise conducted by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), resulting in the deaths of six people and leaving several others injured, the GAF has confirmed.

“The injured persons are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital. Some are in critical condition,” the military added.

In its own statement, the GAF expressed deep regret about the stampede, noting that it took place prior to the commencement of the 2025/2026 recruitment exercise.
