Singapore has long supported the Palestinian people’s right to a homeland. We believe a negotiated two-state solution is the only path to a durable peace. There is no other alternative.

Regrettably, extremist elements on both sides are undermining prospects for a two-state solution. That’s why Singapore has decided to impose targeted sanctions against the leaders of radical settler groups who carry out acts of violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.

Singapore will recognise a Palestinian state when there is an effective government that accepts Israel’s right to exist and categorically renounces terrorism. The situation is dynamic and we are closely monitoring developments. We will reconsider our stance if the situation deteriorates. We will do our part to keep alive prospects for a two-state solution.

Meanwhile, we will continue to contribute in practical ways: over S$24 million in humanitarian aid and medical support for Gaza, and, importantly, capacity-building programmes for the Palestinian Authority to prepare Palestinians for eventual statehood.

The horrific conflict in Gaza is painful to watch, and emotions run deep. But we must not allow events abroad to divide us here at home. Let us stay united as one people — and, together, do our part to build peace both in Singapore and beyond our shores.
