We’re restoring the spirit of the United Party — Alan Kyerematen

Former NPP member, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has reintroduced the “United Party” (UP) into Ghana’s political landscape, marking what he calls a “continuation of a historical tradition” rather than a fresh start.

The former NPP stalwart, who earlier founded the Movement for Change, unveiled the new party as a direct evolution of that movement.

Speaking in an interview after the launch, as monitored by Lovinghananews.com, Kyerematen described the UP as a rebirth of the original United Party, founded in November 1957, when seven political groups merged to avoid being dissolved under the Avoidance of Discrimination Act introduced by President Kwame Nkrumah.

“The United Party is not new to Ghana’s political dispensation,” he said. “It was about unity, freedom, and fighting dictatorship, and we are rekindling those very values today.”

He explained that the contemporary UP draws inspiration from the same political heritage that birthed Dr. K. A. Busia’s Progress Party and later the Popular Front Party. “It’s a chain of groupings built on one tradition,” Kyerematen noted.

“We are simply restoring that spirit under a modern democratic framework.”

According to him, Ghana’s political culture has become overly divisive, and the timing is right for a party that stands for consensus and balance.

“Our politics today is so rancorous that the need for a third force has become critical. If there was ever a time for a unifying platform, that time is now,” he said.

He emphasized that the United Party seeks to represent a centrist philosophy, “taking the best of the center-right and center-left”, while promoting inclusiveness across religion, ethnicity, and class.

“We want to mobilize the collective strengths and talents of all Ghanaians,” he declared.
