Why we couldn’t campaign in some areas ahead of 2024 elections – Wontumi

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has downplayed suggestions that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was responsible for the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking to party faithful, Wontumi argued that internal wranglings, not the performance of the NPP’s flagbearer, led to the electoral setback.

“We couldn’t even campaign in some areas because the people were upset with us,” he admitted.

He drew parallels between the current situation and the party’s past experiences in the late 1990s, noting that the loyalty of delegates remains intact.

“Just as in 1998, when the same delegates who voted in 1996 repeated their support, the same is happening in 2026.

“The delegates who voted in 2023 will be the same ones voting in 2026—and it’s all because of Bawumia,” Wontumi declared.

He further appealed to the party’s delegates to rally behind the current flagbearer, insisting that nature itself had aligned in Bawumia’s favor.

“Just as the same voters’ album was repeated in 1996 for Kufuor’s sake and he won, I plead with all delegates voting in 2026: it’s because of Dr. Bawumia that nature has ensured the same album will be repeated.

“Let’s vote for Dr. Bawumia. Because of Bawumia, even former NPP executives now have voting rights in our internal elections.”
