The Blue Water Guards under the Prestea Huni Valley Municipal Assembly have carried out another major swoop on the Mansi River, destroying a changfan machine and a number of tools used by illegal miners.
The operation, which formed part of a routine river inspection, uncovered more than ten illegal miners busily dredging the river.
Upon spotting the guards, the miners turned hostile and attempted to attack the team but were quickly overpowered and they fled into the nearby bush, abandoning their equipment.
Although no arrests were made, Allan Acheampong, the team leader of the Blue Water Guards, described the operation as successful, noting that it neutralized critical equipment used in illegal mining.
He reaffirmed the team’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s water bodies and the environment from the devastating effects of galamsey.
This marks the second major crackdown by the team on the Mansi River. On July 5, a similar operation at Dwabeng led to the destruction of two changfan machines.
Once a vital source of clean drinking water for Dwabeng, Bogoso, Ehyireso, and other adjoining communities, the Mansi River has now become heavily polluted due to persistent illegal mining activities.
The Blue Water Guards have vowed to intensify patrols and enforcement along major rivers in the municipality to protect water quality and preserve livelihoods for local communities.
