2024 Polls: NPP parliamentary candidates outperformed Bawumia – Bryan Acheampong

The Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has stated that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) performance in the 2024 general elections revealed that its parliamentary candidates significantly outperformed the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking on Face to Face on Channel One TV on Tuesday, December 23, in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Dr. Acheampong attributed the party’s electoral defeat to challenges with both governance and its presidential candidate.

“We went into the 2024 elections, and the results reflected two things: we had a governance challenge, and we also had a candidate challenge,” he said.

He explained that the disparity between parliamentary and presidential results across constituencies highlighted the scale of the problem.

“The governance challenge was evident from the performance of our parliamentary candidates. In most constituencies, our parliamentary candidates outperformed our presidential candidate in the same elections, under the same party,” Dr. Acheampong stated.

He cited his own constituency as an example, noting that he received more votes than the party’s presidential candidate.

“In my case, I did better than my presidential candidate,” he said.

Dr. Acheampong also pointed to Okaikwei South, where NPP parliamentary candidate Dakoa Newman lost by about 5,000 votes, while the presidential candidate’s margin of defeat was roughly 11,000 votes.

He noted that this trend was consistent nationwide and unprecedented in Ghana’s electoral history.

“When you aggregate all the parliamentary results, our candidates outperformed the presidential candidate by nearly 350,000 votes. This has never happened before in the country,” he said.

Dr. Acheampong concluded that the outcome of the 2024 elections underscores the need for the NPP to critically examine both its governance record and presidential candidature moving forward.
