“Any Man Giving GH¢10 or GH¢20 Offering Is Not Ready for Marriage” – Ghanaian Pastor Tells Female Congregants

A video circulating on social media has sparked heated debate after a Ghanaian pastor, Rev. Mordecai Takal, reportedly told female members of his congregation that men who give only GH¢10 or GH¢20 as church offerings are not financially or spiritually ready for marriage.

In the clip shared by popular Ghanaian content page SIKAOFFICIAL1
on X (formerly Twitter), the pastor argues that a man’s inability to give generously in the house of God is a clear sign he lacks the capacity to provide abundantly for a wife and family.

“Any man who gives GH¢10/GH¢20 offering is not ready for marriage,” the pastor is heard saying, adding that such stinginess toward God reflects a deeper unwillingness or inability to take care of a woman.

The sermon, delivered to what appears to be a predominantly female audience, frames generous giving as a key indicator of a man’s character, generosity, and readiness for marital responsibility.

    Mixed Reactions Online

The post has drawn strong reactions from netizens, with many accusing the pastor of using the pulpit for financial manipulation and extortion.

One user quoted Bible scripture in response: “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)

Others suggested the message could be pushing young men away from church attendance, with comments like “No wonder most of the youth don’t like going to church” and “Reasons why boys dey miss church on Sundays.”

Some critics went further, describing the teaching as “daylight robbery” and questioning whether the offering is truly “going to God or the pastor.”

Defenders, however, argue that the pastor is simply encouraging financial responsibility and generosity among believers, especially in the context of preparing for marriage.

    Broader Context

This incident adds to ongoing conversations in Ghana about the intersection of faith, money, and marriage. Similar sermons linking financial giving in church to personal blessings or readiness for life milestones have previously stirred debate across the country.
