Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has welcomed an International Monetary Fund (IMF) team to Accra for the sixth and final review of Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility programme, describing the partnership as a transformative success that pulled the country back from the 2022 economic crisis.
In a statement marking the start of the review, Dr. Forson reflected on the journey, noting that through difficult but necessary decisions, Ghana has stabilised its economy and restored international credibility. He expressed gratitude to the IMF mission, led by Dr. Ruben Atoyan, on behalf of President and the Ghanaian people.
While celebrating the progress, the Minister was candid about ongoing challenges. He highlighted youth unemployment as a major risk that requires urgent attention, warning that without creating enough opportunities in the private sector, pressure on the government to provide jobs could become unsustainable.
“Our path forward is deliberate: we must ensure that stability translates into more investment, more jobs, and more opportunities for all,” Dr. Forson emphasised. He added that before the mission concludes, the government will make key decisions on the next phase of reforms aimed at strengthening policy credibility, maintaining discipline, and boosting investor confidence.
The IMF team reportedly shares this positive assessment, calling the current stage a significant milestone achieved through strong government efforts.
This review marks a critical point for Ghana’s $3 billion IMF-supported programme, which is on track for completion later in 2026. Officials say the focus now shifts to converting economic gains into broader prosperity for ordinary citizens.
The development comes as Ghana continues efforts to build on recent stability and address lingering structural issues in the economy.
