New guidelines for Parent-Teacher Associations in the offing – Education Minister

The Ministry of Education is taking decisive steps to streamline the operations of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) across Ghana.

New guidelines are being introduced to regulate how PTAs function in schools, with the aim of ensuring they complement the government’s efforts to maintain a smooth and supportive academic environment.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, addressing the media in Accra, revealed that the move is part of broader reforms in the sector.

“The time has come to reintroduce PTAs—not as a burden on parents, but as partners in education. We need a structure that supports transparency, accountability, and collaboration,” the Minister stated.

After more than eight years of suspension, Parent-Teacher Associations are set to return to Ghana’s education system.

The previous administration suspended PTA activities amid concerns over misuse of funds and allegations that some PTAs had colluded with school heads to levy illegal fees on parents—despite the rollout of the Free SHS programme.

Now, the current government is reintroducing the PTA—this time, under a stricter framework.

Earlier this year, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu set up a committee to review the PTA’s role and responsibilities. That committee has completed its work and submitted its final report to the Ministry.

The report outlines a new operational framework designed to ensure PTAs play a constructive role in supporting schools, without undermining government policy.

Professor Ernest Davis, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, welcomed the reforms.

“These guidelines mark a significant step forward,” Professor Davis said. “They will help us resolve some of the longstanding challenges in our schools and ensure parents are meaningfully involved in the education of their children.”

“With these new rules in place, we expect to see stronger collaboration between parents, teachers, and school administrators. Our focus is on building trust and ensuring that no child is left behind.”
