A momentous recognition for Ghana and for Africa’s future!

At the sidelines of UNGA 80, African Heads of State unanimously praised President John Dramani Mahama for his visionary Africa Health Sovereignty Summit that was held in Accra in August.

The initiative has successfully revitalised continent-wide discussions on health self-sufficiency and resilience, setting a new trajectory for our continent.

Amidst significant funding reductions from international partners, including an estimated £8 billion cut from the United States alone, the leaders recognised the urgent need for Africa to break cycles of dependency.

At the Committee of Heads of State and Government of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) meeting, which had the Director General of the World Health Organisation in attendance, the leaders agreed to establish regional drug manufacturing hubs, targeting 60% of Africa’s pharmaceutical demand by 2040.

Drawing inspiration from India’s robust sector, this will not only cut drug prices but also create vital employment opportunities across Africa.

President Mahama highlighted Ghana’s proactive steps, including the uncapping of our National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to expand access, and the ‘Big Push’ initiative, which will significantly increase investments in our health sector starting next year.

The ‘Accra Reset’ continues to drive progress!
