Marriage is often framed as a sacred union, yet for some, the reality can be far more complicated than anticipated.
On the Honest Bumch podcast, Barrister Olamide Onifade and Okon Lagos shared cautionary tales that challenge the assumption that following strict moral codes guarantees happiness.
Onifade recounted several legal cases where women married men as virgins, only to discover severe sexual incompatibilities later.
“Now she’s stuck with him for two years… the man couldn’t get it up at all,” he said, warning that abstinence does not automatically shield couples from disappointment.
He argued that experience and awareness matter, as expectations formed in isolation can leave partners unprepared for reality.
The conversation expanded to the risks of misunderstanding in sexual expectations and the consequences of early misjudgments.
Okon Lagos drew attention to the phenomenon of “send forth” sexual encounters during wedding preparations, explaining how miscalculations can even result in complex situations like twins with different fathers.
While controversial, the examples highlight how assumptions without verification can complicate marital life.
Trust emerged as a central theme. The lawyers advised that issues like DNA testing, while sometimes necessary, must be approached carefully.
“You don’t have to announce it… because the issue of trust will be broken,” Lagos noted.
The discussion underscored that the foundation of a healthy marriage is not just moral conduct or virginity but communication, understanding, and discretion.
