The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has secured the conviction of two men involved in a robbery at Kyekyewere near Obuasi.
Francis Oppong, also known as Kwame Abuu, and Francis Nyamekye, also known as Amearo, were found guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery, aiding and abetting robbery, and robbery after a full trial at the Bekwai Circuit Court.
The court, presided over by His Honour Mr. Isaac Appeatu Esq., sentenced Oppong to 15 years with hard labour and Nyamekye to 25 years with hard labour. Both have been transferred to Kumasi Central Prison to begin serving their sentences.
The robbery occurred on December 16, 2023, targeting a small-scale miner. Police investigations revealed that Oppong monitored the victim’s movements and shared information with the gang. During the attack, the victim was assaulted and robbed of a pump-action gun, a Huawei phone worth GH¢1,200, 18 pounds of gold valued at about GH¢100,000, and GH¢2,000 in cash.
Nyamekye was later arrested at a private hospital in Obuasi, where he was receiving treatment for gunshot injuries sustained during a failed robbery attempt.
Police say investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accomplices.
