“GETTING MARRIED AS AN ARTIST IS A STUPID MOVE”—Nigerian Singer Chike

Nigerian singer and actor Chike-Ezekpeazu Osebuka, known mononymously as Chike, has stirred controversy after publicly expressing strong reservations about marriage particularly for artists in the early stages of their careers.

In a video sighted by NKONKONSA, the “Running to You” hitmaker described getting married as a “stupid step” for any young music artist trying to break through or sustain momentum in the competitive entertainment industry.

“I don’t think any young artist who’s trending or trying to get to the next place in their career should get married. In fact, I think it’s a stupid step. That’s my personal opinion,” he declared.

Chike emphasized that for artists, especially those with a female-dominated fan base, marriage could be perceived as a threat to their marketability and public image. He noted that the emotional expectations placed on married public figures often conflict with the realities of performance culture, including intimate scenes at clubs and fan interactions.

“If I’m in the club today and someone’s grinding on me, that’s fine. But if I were married, it suddenly becomes a problem,” he said. “People forget I’m an artist first.”

While making it clear that he wasn’t promoting infidelity, Chike argued that artists in their prime should focus on their craft and growth rather than rushing into marriage. He even referenced fellow artist Adekunle Gold, suggesting that such stars must navigate awkward fan moments and remain disciplined while in the spotlight.

“You have to sacrifice something to get something,” Chike concluded.

His remarks have since triggered widespread conversation online, with some applauding his honesty while others criticized his view as dismissive of the value of commitment and family life.

Chike, a finalist on Project Fame West Africa and runner-up on The Voice Nigeria Season 1, is known for his soulful vocals, romantic ballads, and compelling stage presence. His comments now open a broader discussion on how fame, marriage, and public perception intersect in the entertainment industry
