Environmental journalist Erastus Asare Donkor has confirmed that the IGP’s anti-galamsey taskforce enforcing environmental laws has been withdrawn.

He made this confirmation via social media.

Confirming the withdrawal, Erastus Asare Donkor shared an audio of the Chairman of the Small Scale Miners Association, Kojo Peprah, in which he is heard informing his members to move back to site to work.

In an audio message sent to his members, he assured them that they can return to the site to work without fear.

Kojo Peprah is heard in the audio telling his members that any taskforce they see on their sites is illegal and must be arrested.

He urged members whose excavators had been seized to present their documents so they could retrieve their excavators.

His post shared via social media read “GALAMSEY UPDATE:

This is the Chairman of the small scale miners association, Kojo Peprah, announcing the withdrawal of the IGP’s taskforce which has been enforcing environmental laws.

He made this audio this evening and has asked all miners to share on platforms for people whose excavators have been seized to present their documents and take their excavators back.

He’s also heard telling all miners to take their equipment back to site to start work.

He is admonishing miners that from tomorrow, anybody who will come to anybody’s site identifying as a taskforce should be reported to have them arrested.

I just checked on the ground, indeed the IGP’s taskforce has been withdrawn this evening.

Prepare for general Galamsey!! I thought this government wanted to fight something that has already destroyed our major rivers and streams and continue to turn our lands into vast desolate wilderness.

At this point, journalists and well meaning Ghanaians, the ball is in your court.

If you will allow the cancer to spread, it’s in your hands. I’ve done my bit”
