Police in Kasoa have arrested a 42-year-old herbalist for attempting to smuggle hacksaw blades into a police cell in what authorities believe was a planned prison escape.

The suspect, Mohammed Hamidu, was apprehended after concealing two hacksaw blades in a loaf of bread intended for a remand prisoner at the Kasoa Central Business District Police Station.

According to the Central East Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service, the incident occurred on April 14, 2026, at approximately 8:00 p.m., when the suspect arrived at the station with six plastic bottles of carbonated drinks and a loaf of bread for the inmate.

However, a routine inspection of the items uncovered the hidden hacksaw blades carefully embedded in the bread, leading to his immediate arrest.

The intended recipient, Cephas Bubune Sisiawor, is currently in custody serving a remand term for his alleged involvement in a robbery case.

Police investigations suggest that the prisoner had instructed the suspect during an earlier visit to retrieve the items from an individual identified as Emmanuel, reportedly located near the Lucky Herbal Clinic in Kasoa.

Authorities say the suspect complied with the request and attempted to deliver the concealed tools, believed to be intended to facilitate an escape from custody.

Meanwhile, the individual identified as Emmanuel remains at large, and police have launched a manhunt to apprehend him.

Mohammed Hamidu remains in police custody as investigations continue into the attempted smuggling and possible conspiracy to aid a prison break.

The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to maintaining strict security protocols within detention facilities and has urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement authorities in preventing criminal activities.
