NDC Primaries: 12 battle for Tamale Central seat

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will hold its parliamentary primaries today, Saturday, September 6, to elect a candidate for the Tamale Central Constituency.

The contest follows the passing of the late Member of Parliament, Alhaji Murtala Muhammed, who lost his life along with seven others in a tragic helicopter crash.

Twelve aspirants, including three women, are vying for the slot at the Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium. Party officials say the keenly contested primary is expected to produce a candidate capable of retaining the seat for the NDC and continuing the legacy of the late MP.

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Police Command has assured residents and delegates of tight security arrangements throughout the exercise. Regional Commander DCOP Wisdom Lavoe said over 400 personnel have been deployed to safeguard the venue and ensure a peaceful process before, during, and after the polls.

The outcome of the primaries is expected to set the tone for the NDC’s preparations ahead of the general elections.

The Northern Regional Directorate of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress outlined key guidelines for the primary on September 5, detailing the conduct of the election.

According to a notice signed by Dr. Arnold Mashud Abukari, Director of Elections and IT, voting will begin Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 9 a.m. and close at 2 p.m. sharp.

The process will involve four ballot boxes, each assigned to a specific electoral area. Delegates will be issued QR-code-enabled tags containing their details, and are also required to present an additional form of identification, such as a voter ID, Ghana Card, or party membership card.

Accredited observers will only be allowed at the supporters’ stands of the stadium and cannot access the inner perimeter without prior approval.

Candidates are permitted to present four agents per ballot box, though only one will sign the collated sheet. Each candidate will also be granted access to the inner perimeter with two accredited representatives.

The NDC further emphasised that delegates will not be allowed to enter the voting booth with mobile phones, while candidates are barred from transporting delegates to the centre or engaging in campaigning on the voting grounds.

As part of the arrangements, polling stations have been designated to serve specific electoral areas. Polling Station 1 will cater for regional and constituency executives as well as branches from Agric Mohiyebihi, Gumbihini North, and Aboaboo Ward. Polling Station 2 covers Moshi-Zongo, Tishigu, Salamba, ADB, Warizihi, and Gumbihini South.

Polling Station 3 will serve Dakpemfong, Buglanfong, Sabonjida, and Victory Wards. Polling Station 4 will accommodate delegates from Changli, Choggu West, Dohinaayili, Zogbeli, and Lamacara.

Dr. Abukari assured delegates and stakeholders that the measures are aimed at ensuring a smooth, transparent, and credible electoral process in line with the party’s commitment to fairness and internal democracy.
