Political thieves raising broke ‘armies’ to defend their deeds – Top Journalist laments

Renowned legal practitioner and Top Journalist, Samson Lardy Anyenini, has lashed out at Ghana’s political class, accusing them of protecting corruption while ordinary citizens suffer.

Speaking at CoMSSAFest 2025, a seminar organized by the Communication and Media Studies Students’ Association (CoMSSA) of the School of Communication and Media Studies(SCMS) at the University of Education, Winneba(UEW), he said Ghana’s democracy is under siege because “gargantuan political thieves” continue to loot state resources and then mobilize “a broke army” of ordinary people to defend them.

Anyenini pointed to the removal of former Auditor-General Yaw Daniel Domelevo as a turning point in Ghana’s anti-corruption fight. He argued that Domelevo was not retired because of age but because he was recovering millions of cedis from corrupt officials.

“Let’s call a spade a spade. He was sacked because he was chasing the people who were stealing. Since his removal, how many surcharges and disallowances have been issued?” he asked.

Quoting the Supreme Court’s ruling that empowered the Auditor-General to recover stolen funds, Anyenini lamented that the current officeholder has failed to use those powers, despite public pressure.

He warned that the cost of corruption is directly felt in the struggles of Ghanaians: hunger, joblessness, homelessness, and poor infrastructure. “For five years, grand corruption has taken almost GH¢80 billion from your kitty. Count the next five years. How much more will be stolen?” he charged.

According to him, Ghana’s biggest crisis is not petty corruption but elite looting. He stressed that the Constitution requires public officers to declare assets and account for unexplained wealth — a duty that is largely ignored.

“Our democracy is not secure, and we know why. Because people are hungry, jobless, and hopeless, while a few steals with impunity. This is why effective communication must expose grand corruption, not whitewash it,” he told the gathering.
