Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Abass Imoro, has expressed concern over the ongoing controversy surrounding unauthorized fare hikes by drivers, causing chaos at transport terminals and lorry parks across the country.
In an interview with Channel One TV on Tuesday, December 23, Imoro emphasised that it is illegal for drivers to charge unapproved fares and called on law enforcement agencies to take swift action.
He assured the public that the union is taking steps to address the issue, including planned discussions with the Ministry of Trade to curb unauthorized fare increases.
“The leadership is working to ensure that after the holidays, we meet with the Transport Minister to make sure that charging above approved fares becomes a thing of the past. It is very disheartening. We do not support it, and we will make sure it stops,” he said.
Imoro further urged passengers to resist paying fares above the approved rates, stressing that any unauthorized increases are illegal and punishable under the law.
