A man suspected of supplying Indian hemp in Tamale allegedly attempted to bribe police officers with GH¢20,000 to secure his release, but was arrested and is currently in custody.

The suspect, Lukman Karim, a farmer from Diare, a suburb of Tamale, was arrested by the Northern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (RPID) on Friday, March 13, 2026, after officers received intelligence about his alleged involvement in the cultivation and supply of the substance.

A police source said officers had been monitoring Karim’s activities for some time and gathered information suggesting he was cultivating and distributing the substance to markets within Tamale.

During the arrest, police reportedly discovered two and a half large sacks of soya beans suspected of concealing Indian hemp.

According to the police, the suspect attempted to offer officers GH¢20,000 in exchange for his freedom, but the officers declined the bribe and proceeded with the arrest.

Karim is also said to have mentioned one Alhaji Moro as an accomplice. Police say efforts are underway to locate and arrest the other suspect as part of attempts to dismantle the alleged supply network.

The suspect and the seized items have since been handed over to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) for further investigations and possible prosecution.

The Ghana Police Service said the Northern Regional Command remains committed to intelligence-led operations aimed at combating drug trafficking and related crimes in the region.
