The Ghana Police Service in the North East Region has secured the conviction of two individuals for possessing restricted drugs, following a successful collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC).

The suspects, Mumuni Iddrisu and Alhassan Braimah, were arrested at Gbintiri near Nalerigu on September 18, 2025, after authorities discovered 1,195 boxes of tramadol hydrochloride 120mg, popularly called “Red.”

“Investigation disclosed that one hundred boxes of the tramadol were found in their possession, and they had also concealed over 4,500 packs of the drug in 25 five-liter yellow gallons,” the police stated.

The two pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of restricted drugs without lawful authority when they appeared before the Nalerigu Circuit Court on September 26, 2025.

The court, presided over by His Lordship Justice Francis Asobayire, sentenced each of them to ten years in prison on each count. They were also fined GH¢60,000 each, with a default penalty of an additional ten years’ imprisonment.

“The two convicts have been taken to the Gambaga local prison to begin their sentences,” the police confirmed.

In a statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Robert Anabiik Anmain, the police commended the public for their cooperation.

“We would like to commend the people of the North East Region, especially the leadership of the Nalerigu Youth Association, for their support and collaboration in the successful arrest and prosecution of the convicts,” the statement said.

The police also issued a warning to others involved in the illicit drug trade.

“We caution all persons engaged in the illicit drug business in the Region to put a stop to the practice. Such individuals or groups will face the full rigours of the law when caught,” the statement concluded.
