The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed a surge in typhoid fever cases in the Oti Region, particularly in the Biakoye, Krachi East, Krachi West, and Krachi Nchumuru Districts.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 28, 2025, and signed by Dr. Caroline Reindorf Amissah, Acting Deputy Director-General of GHS, the Service said it is working closely with the Oti Regional Coordinating Council and the Ministry of Health to respond to the situation.
“We are coordinating efforts to respond to the reported surge in typhoid fever cases in the Oti Region. The National Case Management Rapid Response Team has been deployed to support the regional team to ascertain the situation,” the statement read.
The GHS explained that typhoid fever, caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi, spreads through the faecal-oral route, often when people consume contaminated food or water.
Dr. Amissah urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, stressing the need for strict hygiene practices.
“Ensure drinking water is safe by boiling, wash your hands with soap under running water after toilet visits and before meals, and avoid open defecation near streams or wells,” she advised.
