Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh says the monopolization of the national health data system is a major factor contributing to the current disruptions faced by the health system.
He made the point during Public Accounts Committee (PAC) sitting on Thursday, October 30, 2025.
The Minister explained that monopolization has given the contractor excessive leverage, delaying critical data access and service continuity.
“The system was monopolized. If there were about four or three or two vendors, maybe if he’s squeezing our balls at this point, the others may not,” Mr. Akandoh said, referring to the vendor behind the LightWave Health Information Management System (LHIMS).
He stressed: “So going forward the decision is that the 500 left we are going to open up, but we have to deal with this emergency,” he noted.
Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced a four-week plan to resolve the ongoing breakdown in the country’s electronic healthcare management system.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, October 29, the Health Minister disclosed that a new platform — the Ghana Healthcare Information Management System — has been procured by the government to address the challenges and ensure continuity of healthcare delivery.
