Efia Odo has called for greater transparency and advanced communication from authorities as Ghana battles persistent power outages known as “dumsor.”
Speaking on United Showbiz on UTV, the socialite said the frequent interruptions have made life difficult for citizens and argued that clearer communication from officials would help people prepare better instead of being caught off guard.
She also addressed how public commentary on national issues is often politicised, saying this has influenced her decision to stay quiet on many occasions to avoid being boxed into party affiliations.
“A time came when I wanted to refrain from engaging in political conversations because when you say something, they tag you either NDC or NPP, and someone like me is easily tagged as political, so I don’t say anything. I just keep quiet and endure everything,” she stated.
Despite her usual reluctance to speak on such matters, Efia Odo said the current electricity situation has become too serious to ignore and requires urgent and honest communication from those in charge.
She proposed that authorities should notify the public ahead of planned outages, arguing that such a system would reduce confusion and help households and businesses organise their daily activities more effectively.
“Let us know what’s the real reason dumsor is happening because when we calculate the power, it doesn’t make sense. In America, when there’s an incident, you’re notified so you will know what to do; so the same thing should be happening here in Ghana. When the light is about to go off, we should be notified,” she stressed.
Efia Odo added that she does not believe political leaders would want their legacy associated with prolonged power challenges, including President John Dramani Mahama, whom she believes would prefer the issue resolved rather than defining his record.
“I don’t think any politician would deliberately want to give themselves a bad name. Of everything President Mahama has done, I don’t think he intentionally wants dumsor to be a thing that brings him down. And if he doesn’t want it to bring him down, then they need to be honest,” she further stated.
