Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Hon. John Setor Dumelo, has announced a new initiative to provide free Ghana-made cocoa drinks to public basic school pupils in his constituency.

In a statement dated February 19, 2026, the MP revealed that effective March 2, 2026, all pupils from Class 1 to Class 4 in public basic schools within the constituency will receive free cocoa drinks once every week until the end of the academic year.

According to Dumelo, the initiative is aimed at improving the nutrition and overall well-being of schoolchildren while promoting local industry.

He described cocoa as a “highly nutritional powerhouse,” noting that it is rich in essential antioxidants, iron and magnesium, which are vital for cognitive development and maintaining high energy levels throughout the school day.

Beyond the health benefits, the MP said the programme is also designed to boost Ghana’s local economy by sourcing exclusively Ghana-made cocoa products. This, he explained, will directly support cocoa farmers and local manufacturers.

Dumelo further indicated that the initiative is expected to enhance school attendance by providing nutritious incentives that encourage consistent enrolment and participation in public schools.

He added that the programme would also instill a sense of national pride in pupils by helping them appreciate cocoa, often referred to as the “gold” of Ghana, and its significance to the country’s heritage.

“This program is a testament to our belief that a healthy child is a teachable child. Together, we are building a stronger, healthier, and smarter future for Ayawaso West Wuogon,” the statement concluded.

The initiative has already sparked interest among residents, with many praising the move as a practical intervention to support both education and local agriculture.
