Stop the everyday politics and pay us now – Cocoa farmers tell govt

Young cocoa farmers across Ghana are expressing growing frustration over delays in receiving payments for cocoa beans they sold several months ago, calling on the government to release funds owed to them.

In a press release dated March 12, 2026, the Young Cocoa Farmers Association accused government officials of engaging in what they described as ‘cocoa politics’ while farmers continue to struggle without the payments due them.

The group said that although farmers were unhappy about the recent reduction in cocoa prices, they had reluctantly accepted the decision because they had no alternative.

However, they insist that accepting the new price does not mean they are satisfied with the current situation.

“Young cocoa farmers are growing increasingly frustrated with the continuous discussions and statements from government officials concerning the recent cocoa price reduction and the alleged release of funds for farmer payments.

Although we have reluctantly accepted the new price, it does not mean we are satisfied. We have simply accepted it because we have no other option.”

According to the association, government officials had earlier indicated that funds had been released to Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs) for onward payment to farmers. Despite these assurances, the group claims many cocoa farmers are yet to receive payment for cocoa beans they sold more than four months ago.

The farmers described the situation as deeply discouraging, noting that cocoa production requires significant effort, dedication and financial investment.

The association added that the delay in payments is making it extremely difficult for farmers to sustain their livelihoods and support their families. They say many farmers are already facing financial hardship as the lean season approaches.
