Akon Sparks Debate: “Men Are Not Built to Be Committed” in Relationships

Senegalese-American singer Akon has ignited widespread online discussion after claiming that men are biologically “not built to be committed” to a single partner and are instead “natural breeders” wired for multiple relationships.

In a candid interview on Stepping Into The Shade Room, Akon (real name Aliaune Badara Thiam) argued that strict monogamy conflicts with male nature, which he described as driven by an instinct to “populate.”

“We’re not committed. We’re not built to be committed. We’re natural breeders by nature, right? Okay. We populate because that’s how God created us to be. So we can’t be committed to one, or two, or three, or whatever. It’s not our thing,” he said.

Akon was quick to draw a sharp distinction between commitment and faithfulness. While he acknowledged that men are not wired for exclusivity, he insisted they can still remain emotionally loyal and supportive of a primary partner.

“We’re not wired to be committed. But if faithfulness is something totally different. I can be with a chick and be with her forever through all the problems. No matter what, I can find the baddest chick alive and have my main chick,” he explained.

He illustrated his point with a vivid hypothetical: even if caught in a compromising situation with another woman, a man’s true faithfulness would show in his willingness to fight for and prioritize his main relationship.

“Could be in a hotel, and she busts down the door, and I’m knee-deep in there, I’m gonna jump up like, ‘I didn’t even know her!’ She means nothing to me because this is what I’m faithful to. That’s faithfulness, that’s creating that energy to fight for it.”

Akon further claimed that most relationship conflicts stem from this dynamic, noting: “We’re gonna be with multiple women, that’s who we are… otherwise, it wouldn’t be a coincidence that every single woman on this planet, if they have a problem with their spouse, it’s over another woman.”

The remarks quickly went viral after being highlighted  where the post noted that Akon’s comments have already drawn mixed reactions, with some men expressing support for his views on gender and monogamy.
    Personal Context

Akon’s statements come as he continues to navigate public scrutiny over his personal life. His wife filed for divorce in September 2025 after 28 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. The singer, who has nine children, has previously spoken openly in favor of polygamy.

    Broader Discussion

The interview has fueled debates about biology versus societal expectations in modern relationships, with some praising Akon for his honesty and others criticizing the views as excusing infidelity or undermining monogamy.
Akon also touched on cultural differences in gender roles during the conversation, contrasting dynamics in America and Africa while emphasizing mutual respect between partners.

The full episode of Stepping Into The Shade Room is available on The Shade Room’s platforms for those interested in the complete discussion, which also covered topics like his music career and industry insights.
