Ghana is set to host a high-level international conference on reparatory justice in June 2026, following the historic adoption of a United Nations resolution that declared the trans-Atlantic enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.

The conference, scheduled for June 17 to 19 in Accra, will be held under the auspices of the President of Ghana and African Union Champion for Reparations, John Dramani Mahama.

It is being convened as a follow-up to the UN General Assembly resolution, which received the backing of 123 member states.

According to a statement from the organisers, the resolution marks “a significant milestone in advancing global acknowledgment of historical injustices and the need for structured engagement on reparatory justice.”

The upcoming meeting, described as a “High-Level Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice,” will bring together heads of state and government, foreign ministers, academics, legal experts, historians, activists, and representatives of international organisations.

It is expected to focus on translating the UN resolution into a practical global framework for reparations, including policy coordination, institutional mechanisms, and sustained international engagement.

The statement said the outcome document will outline “a collective effort aimed at developing coordinated policy approaches, institutional frameworks and mechanisms for sustained international engagement.”

As part of the programme, organisers announced a special commemoration of Juneteenth (Friday, June 19, 2026) at the Christiansborg Castle in Osu, a site linked to the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The event is expected to involve participation from African and diaspora communities, particularly from the United States.

The conference will also seek to strengthen Africa’s unified position on reparatory justice while deepening collaboration with the African diaspora and international partners.

Further details on registration, accreditation, and participation are available via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ conference portal.
