Deputy Health Minister Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah offers free surgeries to Essikado-Ketan residents

Deputy Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan, Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, has offered a lifeline to 40-year-old Francis Anoom, who is battling a severe bone fracture and tumor.

Dr. Ayensu-Danquah will provide him with free orthopedic and plastic surgery, an intervention expected to restore his mobility and improve his quality of life. The initiative was publicly commended by the Acting CEO of the National Ambulance Service, Dr. George Kojo Owusu.

Once a vibrant provider for his family, Anoom worked as a tie-and-dye instructor and church music teacher. Today, he depends on his wife and six children after his sudden illness.

“I wasn’t born with this condition. It happened suddenly while I was sleeping. When I woke up, my leg had twisted abnormally. I didn’t experience any trauma, didn’t fall, and wasn’t engaged in any physical activity. It just occurred out of nowhere, and now I’m dealing with the aftermath,” he recounted.

However, hope has returned for Anoom through Dr. Ayensu-Danquah’s health initiative, which offers free orthopedic and plastic surgery screenings for conditions such as tumors, fractures, scars, and contractures.

“I’m here today because I heard about the free surgery, and I have a fracture with a tumor on my right leg. I feel fortunate that I’ve qualified for the procedure. I’m grateful to Dr. Grace Ayensu for this opportunity and hopeful for a successful outcome,” he said.

Anoom’s X-ray results revealed a severe fracture in his right leg extending to the pelvic area. Explaining the case, Dr. Ayensu-Danquah said:

“The bone is completely disconnected, so we’ll need to consider a hip replacement or realignment procedure to restore mobility and alleviate discomfort.”

At a media briefing, Dr. Ayensu-Danquah disclosed that 300 people had been screened, with about 50 scheduled for free surgeries starting Monday, August 25, 2025.

“Since moving to this country, I’ve realized that many people struggle with orthopedic and plastic surgery issues. These conditions aren’t always emergencies, but they still need attention. Unfortunately, many can’t afford treatment. We’ve organized several plastic surgery screenings, and this is our first time incorporating orthopedic surgery. The response has been overwhelming, and we’re committed to increasing access and affordability, which is why we’re offering these services completely free,” she said.

The Deputy Minister reaffirmed her commitment to regular health screenings and pledged to upgrade health facilities in the constituency. She revealed plans to improve CHPS compounds and expand hospitals in the Western Region.

“Western Region’s health facilities are in dire need of improvement. Effia Nkwanta Hospital, in particular, faces significant challenges due to limited capacity and lack of specialized care. Upgrading it and transforming Essikado Hospital into a full district hospital would greatly benefit the community. This would ease the burden on Effia Nkwanta and reduce patient backlog. Given the age of the current Essikado Hospital, which dates back to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s era, it’s high time for a modern facility,” she noted.

As part of her philanthropic work, Dr. Ayensu-Danquah distributed assistive devices, including three wheelchairs and a walking stick, to persons with disabilities.

Dr. George Kojo Owusu praised her efforts, saying:

“Dr. Grace’s health initiative is commendable, and I’m happy to support it. She’s been serving the people of Essikado for the past 15 years, and it’s great to see her efforts paying off. I’m grateful for the opportunity to lend my support to this worthy cause.”

For Francis Anoom and many others, this initiative offers a chance at renewed strength and dignity, restoring not just mobility but also hope.
