The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), paid a working visit to two major mining companies, Gold Fields Tarkwa Mines and AngloGold Ashanti’s Iduapriem Mines, on Monday, 5th August, 2025, as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration between the government and large-scale mining firms.

The visit, which took place in the Western Region, served two key purposes: to familiarize the Minister with the companies’ operations and to formally invite them to the upcoming launch of the government’s alternative livelihood initiative, the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP)

During meetings with the management and technical teams of both companies, Hon. Buah emphasized the government’s vision for large-scale mining firms to play a more active role in developing and supporting small-scale mining operations in their host communities.

“I want to see large-scale mining companies nurturing small-scale miners in these areas.” “This way, when we recount Ghana’s mining story, we can highlight tangible efforts to empower the small-scale sector, Hon. Buah stated.

He also commended the companies for their commitment to local participation, describing their workforce as exemplary for Ghana’s broader local content agenda. “I am impressed by the capacity and qualifications of the local employees here. This is what we mean when we speak of Ghanaians taking the commanding heights of the economy,” he added.

The minister disclosed that the government is currently reviewing both the National Mining Policy and the Minerals and Mining Act, with progress at approximately 85% completion. He explained that these reforms aim to make Ghana’s mining laws and policies more responsive and forward-looking.

In a brief media interaction, the minister reaffirmed his commitment to fostering inclusive and sustainable growth in the mining sector while ensuring stakeholders align with the government’s evolving policy direction.
