Comedian DKB has called on organizers of the upcoming September 23 Anti-Galamsey protest to trust President John Mahama’s assurance that his administration is already addressing the illegal mining crisis. In a video message shared on his Facebook page, the comedian urged activists to have faith in the president’s promises, suggesting that protests would be unnecessary given Mahama’s track record of solving national problems. “Yo, this is my message to those who want to organise the Anti-Galamsey Demonstration. Listen, when JM, President Mahama, tells you he is working on something, he is really working on it. He’s not like the others,”…
My mother once told me a story I will never forget. There was this wealthy farmer in the village . He grew many things, but his biggest pride was maize. Every harvest season, he invited villagers to help. He paid them well, so people always showed up. One year, the farmer had his biggest harvest yet. The farm was far from his home, so workers carried the maize to a store where it was weighed. Their pay depended on how much they carried and how many trips they made. The more you carried, the more you earned. That day, they…
We can all be farmers and make money if we are interested. There is a big difference between entering farming and growing your crop of choice. Many young people reach out to me for support. For most, the main challenge is capital. Not that they lack money completely, but many want to begin with premium crops like garlic, tomatoes, or onions. That is possible, and one day you will farm those crops. But for a start, think of an affordable entry crop. Choose something you can finance, where you can learn and gain experience both in farming and marketing. Build…
President John Mahama’s government faces a deepening credibility crisis just six months into office, a new IMANI PULSE report warns. What began as a promise of renewal has soured into accusations of hypocrisy, selective justice, and politically motivated purges. The turning point, according to IMANI, was the mass dismissal of public sector workers in March. While the government defended the move as a “clean-up,” the scale and timing sparked fears of political witch-hunts. Social media branded Mahama “Terminator 1,” a nickname that quickly became a symbol of disillusionment. At the same time, the government’s Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) —…
A new nationwide poll by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has revealed that most Ghanaians prefer Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to be elected, and on a non-partisan basis. The survey, conducted between August 15 and 26, 2025, gathered responses from citizens aged 18 and above across all 16 regions. According to the findings, 67.9 percent of Ghanaians want MMDCEs to be elected rather than appointed. Among those in favour of elections, 63.5 percent prefer that they be conducted without the involvement of political parties. The report comes amid renewed debate on the matter, following President John…
The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has launched a manhunt for four individuals accused of engaging in illegal gold smuggling. The suspects have been identified as Abdul Karim, Sadique Abubakar, Muhammed Afsal Puth Puthalan, and Muhammed Nandoli Rafeeq. According to GoldBod’s Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, the four are part of a group of seven individuals involved in the illicit trade. Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, September 16, Mr. Gyamfi disclosed that three members of the group have already been arrested and are currently in the custody of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). He further revealed that…
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) government under President John Dramani Mahama began 2025 with high public approval, but just six months later, the optimism appears to be slipping away. According to IMANI Africa’s latest Public Understanding and Literacy for Sentiment and Election Analysis (PULSE) report, enthusiasm surrounding the new administration has given way to skepticism, frustration, and even fear. The think tank, which analyzed over 22,000 online mentions across Facebook, X, YouTube, TikTok, podcasts, and newsfeeds, noted that January’s inauguration and the launch of the ResettingGhana agenda inspired 65–70 percent positive sentiment. The swearing-in of Ghana’s first female Vice President,…
The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has expressed deep disappointment over what it describes as the government’s failure to treat illegal and irresponsible mining, commonly known as galamsey, as the national crisis it has become. In a statement dated Monday, September 15, 2025, the Bishops warned that the President’s recent remarks at Jubilee House risked legitimizing the menace of galamsey rather than curbing it. “Wittingly or unwittingly, these statements seemed to support the environmental terrorism and menace of galamsey. “The President’s narratives, and de facto justifications, on such a platform will only serve to give oxygen to impunity, rolling back…
The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has urged government to back its anti-galamsey commitments with stronger enforcement, accountability, and resources. While acknowledging the establishment of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) as a “positive step,” the Bishops stressed that the agency must be adequately resourced to be effective. They proposed that part of Goldbod’s proceeds be directly allocated to NAIMOS and called for confiscated excavators to be auctioned at one-third of their value, with funds redirected to joint enforcement operations by the Forestry Commission and the police. On law enforcement, the Bishops noted that the police remain the primary…
Private legal practitioner Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers has refuted claims by Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine that the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) is acting in a partisan manner in its advocacy on constitutional issues. Speaking to Helen Appiah-Ampofo on 3FM’s Sunrise programme on September 16, Brako-Powers insisted that the GBA’s record shows consistency across different administrations. “The GBA remained conspicuously quiet under President Mahama during Lauretta Lamptey’s removal, and equally silent under President Akufo-Addo during Charlotte Osei’s removal,” he said. “For this reason, if the GBA is now speaking out, it would be unfair — even mischievous — to accuse it of…
