I am his only wife – Why Lumba’s widow is seeking court order to halt funeral rites

Akosua Serwaa, the wife of the late Ghanaian highlife icon Daddy Lumba, has filed a lawsuit against the head of the musician’s extended family, Kofi Owusu, and a woman identified as Priscilla Ofori, popularly called Odo Broni, seeking to halt preparations for Lumba’s burial and final funeral rites.

The case, filed at the Kumasi High Court, also lists Transitions Funeral Home as a respondent. Through her counsel, William Kusi of Dominion Chambers, Serwaa is requesting an interlocutory injunction to restrain the defendants from collecting or burying her husband’s body.

In the affidavit supporting the motion, Serwaa asserts she is the only surviving spouse of the late Charles Kwadwo Fosu, citing a 2004 marriage contracted under German law. She contends that the union, being monogamous, invalidates any claim by another woman to be Lumba’s wife.

The affidavit further alleges that after Lumba’s death on July 26, 2025, Odo Broni appeared claiming to be his widow and, in collaboration with the family head, took control of the deceased’s remains at Transitions Funeral Home.

According to Serwaa, the pair registered their names as the depositors of the body, effectively blocking her from visiting her husband.

She describes their actions as “fraudulent,” accusing them of conspiring to exclude her from the funeral process.

“If the court refuses to grant this application, the Plaintiff will not have the lifetime opportunity to perform the widowhood rites,” the affidavit reads.

Serwaa’s suit seeks a declaration that she alone has the right to perform the widowhood rites and an order restraining both defendants from holding themselves as legitimate representatives of the deceased.

Her lawyer argues that denying her request would inflict irreparable harm, emphasizing that the widowhood rites represent a sacred, once-in-a-lifetime duty that cannot be compensated in damages.
