The lack of sanitary facilities at the Buipe Market is posing significant public health risks, including the possible spread of diseases for traders and customers at the market.

This situation has led to the traders and their customers resorting to open defecation.

The traders are raising public health concerns and urging the Central Gonja District Assembly to intervene.

The Buipe market is the biggest market in the Savannah Region with traders and customers from far and near traveling to the marketplace.

As busy as the market is, the thousands of people who patronize the market do not have access to sanitary facilities.

Secretary of the Cattle Market, Alhaji Mohammed told 3news.com that the challenge has persisted for long with authorities showing no interest in addressing it.

“Right now, if you want to ease yourself, there is nowhere to go. Entering the bush is also dangerous because we are businesspeople and if you enter the bush, you don’t even know who is in the bush,” he lamented.

“The whole place is littered with feacal matter which makes the place unhygienic,” he bemoaned.

According to the Central Gonja District Assembly, redevelopment of the market remains a priority.

District Chief Executive for Central Gonja District, Mahama Fuseini highlighted plans of the Assembly for the market.

“The market is one of my priorities and that of Assembly. 20 people have been employed to sweep the market and for the roads and toilets together with my MP, we will address the challenges. We are committed to developing the market and we will surely do that,” he assured.
