Bryan Acheampong: Bawumia failed to inspire hope in 2024 polls

The Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has criticised the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for failing to inspire hope among voters during the election campaign.

Dr. Acheampong said the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections was partly due to Dr. Bawumia’s inability to galvanise public support, despite serving as Vice President at the time.

Speaking on Face to Face on Channel One TV on Tuesday, December 23, in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu, the Abetifi MP compared Dr. Bawumia’s candidature in 2024 to that of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the 2016 elections.

According to him, former President Akufo-Addo was able to inspire hope among the electorate, which contributed to his electoral victory.

“Leadership inspires hope. Who thought Donald Trump [US President] could win?” Dr. Acheampong said.

He argued that once a candidate steps forward to lead, they must assume full responsibility for providing direction and motivation.

“At any point in time, you step up, and you lead. Once you step up to lead, you become the leader, and you have to inspire and provide direction for the people to follow,” he stated.

Dr. Acheampong noted that while former President Akufo-Addo was able to inspire hope during his campaign, the same could not be said of the NPP’s 2024 effort.

“Akufo-Addo was able to inspire that hope, except that we didn’t cross the line. But we couldn’t inspire that hope, and we got 41% votes. You have to run a campaign that drives the people,” he added.
