Accra, Ghana — Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Vice President of Ghana, joined colleagues at the Presidency to commemorate International Women’s Day, urging stronger action to promote equity for women in the workplace and across society.

The event was held under the theme “From Commitment to Action: Promoting Equity for Every Woman in the Workplace.” It provided an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while also reflecting on the continued efforts required to advance gender equality nationwide.

In her remarks, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang extended warm wishes to women across the country and highlighted the historical contributions of women to Ghana’s social and economic development.

She noted that women have long played key roles in communities as healers, traders, and queen mothers who presided over traditional governance systems.

According to her, Ghana’s cultural heritage reflects the longstanding leadership, knowledge, and innovation of women, making it essential for society to build on that legacy by addressing current disparities.

She stressed that achieving meaningful progress requires a critical examination of existing systems and structures, alongside deliberate efforts to promote equity and mentor the next generation of women leaders.

The Vice President also paid tribute to women working outside formal institutions, particularly those whose “offices” are in markets, streets, and small trading spaces across the country.

She described them as the backbone of local economies, noting that their resilience and determination continue to sustain livelihoods despite challenging conditions.

Commending women serving within the Presidency for their dedication and leadership, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang reaffirmed that promoting equity, respect, and opportunity for every woman is essential for strengthening governance and advancing sustainable national development.

She further called on both men and women to work together to break barriers and ensure that every woman has the opportunity to thrive and contribute fully to the nation’s progress.
