GBC unions end three-day picketing, demand leadership accountability

The Unionized staff of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has successfully concluded a three-day picketing exercise held from March 17 to March 19, 2026, at the Corporation’s premises, as part of efforts to press home their concerns over leadership and governance issues.

The action, described by the Unions as lawful, formed part of a series of measures aimed at expressing dissatisfaction with the Board and Management of the Corporation, particularly the continued stay in office of the Director-General, Amin Alhassan.

According to the Unions, the tenure of Prof. Alhassan expired on October 1, 2023. They contend that his continued occupancy of the position is based on what they describe as an invalid appointment arrangement allegedly issued by the National Media Commission.

The Unions further raised concerns about what they termed unsatisfactory leadership performance, pointing to the general state of affairs within the Corporation as cause for alarm.

The picketing, which was peaceful and orderly, brought together members of both the Senior Staff and Divisional Unions under the collective slogan, “If You Touch One, You Touch All.” Organizers described the exercise as successful, noting strong participation among staff.

However, the Unions indicated that some employees were unable to join the protest due to fears of possible punitive actions, including transfers and dismissals.

They described such fears as reflective of an environment marked by intimidation and undue pressure.

The leadership emphasized that the picketing represents the second phase of legitimate efforts to demand accountability and reforms within GBC. Key among their demands are actions concerning the continued tenure of the Director-General, the Director of Human Resources, and certain members of management.

They reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing all appropriate and lawful channels to ensure transparency, accountability, and effective leadership at the Corporation.
