Three suspects have been arrested by the police in the Eastern Region following an intelligence-led operation that uncovered 1,600 parcels of suspected Indian hemp and an attempt to bribe officers with GH₵100,000.

This was contained in a statement by the Eastern Regional Command issued on Monday, May 11, 2026.

According to the statement, officers from the Regional Police Intelligence Department acted on a tip-off on May 10, 2026, about narcotics allegedly stored at Akosombo-Bonya.

Surveillance operations near Krobo Girls Senior High School led officers to intercept a Hyundai Rhino truck with registration number GR 5724-15, which was later tracked to a secluded area near Atua Government Hospital.

The Police said they moved in as suspects were transferring sacks from the Hyundai truck into a Howo Zonda tipper truck. While some individuals fled, officers secured both vehicles and the suspected narcotics.
Shortly after the seizure, 39-year-old welder Solomon Tettey reportedly approached officers claiming ownership of the vehicles and the consignment. He allegedly told police the shipment was destined for Nigeria.

“The suspect offered the officers a bribe of GH₵100,000 in an attempt to compromise the investigation,” the statement said. “Police personnel feigned interest to secure evidence of the bribery.”

Investigators say GH₵90,000 was transferred via mobile money, with an additional GH₵10,000 handed over in cash, bringing the alleged total to GH₵100,000.

Backup teams from the Regional Counter-Terrorism Unit and Odumase Police later moved in to arrest Tettey. Two additional suspects, Joshua Nartey and Teye Nartey, were subsequently picked up after reporting to the Regional Headquarters.

“All suspects and exhibits have been handed over to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department for further processing and investigation,” the release added.
The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to tackling narcotics trafficking and maintaining integrity within law enforcement operations, saying it will continue “the relentless pursuit of drug trafficking syndicates within the region.”
