The removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama has sparked strong reactions from political leaders, with Sammi Awuku, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing the action as “unprecedented” and a serious threat to the independence of Ghana’s judiciary.
In a statement shared on social media, Mr. Awuku said the decision sets a dangerous precedent, lowering the threshold for the removal of a sitting Chief Justice and undermining the autonomy of the third arm of government.
He noted that Chief Justice Torkornoo served with “uncommon grace and integrity”, emphasizing that her dismissal sends a chilling message to those who uphold justice in the country.
“Her ladyship, Gertrude Torkonoo stood tall, serving with uncommon grace and integrity, yet today we are reminded that in Ghana, the price of defending justice is often paid by those who dare to uphold it,” he said.
Awuku further criticized the speed with which the process was carried out, pointing out that a 10,000-page report was read, reviewed, and its recommendations implemented within hours.
He described the sequence of events as a “new world record for efficiency”, highlighting the extraordinary swiftness of the removal.
“A difficult day for the justice system in the history of Ghana.
“May the toils of our forbears never be in vain as Ghana navigates these challenging times. Interesting times ahead for justice delivery in Ghana,” he added.
