Government of Ghana has initiated plans to evacuate 300 Ghanaian nationals from South Africa following a recent surge in xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.
In a Facebook post, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama has granted presidential approval for the immediate evacuation exercise.
According to the Minister, the affected individuals had earlier complied with a directive issued by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, registering with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria to facilitate their evacuation amid growing safety concerns.
The move comes in response to renewed violence and hostility against foreign nationals in South Africa, which has raised alarm among Ghanaian authorities and prompted swift intervention to ensure the safety of citizens abroad.
Mr. Ablakwa assured that the government remains committed to protecting the welfare and security of Ghanaians both within the country and across the diaspora.
Authorities are expected to coordinate closely with diplomatic missions and relevant stakeholders to ensure a smooth and safe evacuation process.
