Misinformation fuelling galamsey tensions – Security Consultant warns

Security consultant Richard Kumadoe has urged Ghanaians to remain calm and allow due process in the ongoing fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, September 13, Kumadoe stressed that heightened emotions are being fuelled by misinformation.

“When it comes to this whole issue about galamsey, there is a lot of miscommunication and misinformation around it, and that is what is heightening the tension and the emotions about it,” he said.

His call echoes recent remarks by President John Dramani Mahama during a media engagement at the Jubilee House. The President dismissed growing calls for a state of emergency, insisting that rushing into such a drastic measure could complicate rather than resolve the crisis. Mahama argued that while galamsey is a national concern, it must be tackled within the framework of law, policy, and community engagement rather than panic-driven measures.

Kumadoe also cautioned against politicising the matter, warning that partisan clashes between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will derail genuine solutions.

“When you bring in politics between NDC and NPP, we are not going to resolve it,” Kumadoe noted.

Instead, he called on all stakeholders to respect the legal and procedural frameworks already in place, stressing that lasting progress requires patience and adherence to due process.

“So let’s allow the standard procedures to be followed as is being ascribed now,” he added.
