Security around the Akwatia Constituency by-election has been tightened, with authorities declaring the area a strict “no-go zone” for weapons.
The directive was issued on Sunday, August 24, 2025, as the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSAWL) outlined measures to curb possible violence during the polls.
Executive Secretary Dr. Adam A. Bonah warned that anyone found carrying arms or dangerous items — from guns and machetes to pepper spray and tasers — would face immediate arrest and prosecution.
According to Dr. Bonah, Ghana’s democracy continues to face risks from politically motivated violence, often stoked by “inflammatory rhetoric and the unlawful possession of firearms.”
He urged political leaders and candidates to lead by example by preaching calm and encouraging their supporters to campaign peacefully.
NACSAWL further assured that it is working in close coordination with the Ghana Police Service, the Electoral Commission, and other stakeholders to deliver a safe and credible election.
The statement closed with a reminder for all stakeholders to prioritise peace before, during, and after the vote.
