Two separate fire incidents in Accra and Berekum have destroyed properties worth thousands of cedis, although no casualties were recorded in either incident.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the first fire occurred at the South Industrial Area in Accra, where a top-floor warehouse storing plastic disposable materials was engulfed in flames.
The fire was reported at 18:10 hours, prompting a rapid response from firefighters at the Industrial Area Fire Station, who arrived at the scene within six minutes.
Additional support was deployed from multiple fire stations, including the National Headquarters, Accra City, Trade Fair, and Madina, while a Turn-Table Ladder from Tema was also dispatched to assist in the operation.
Through coordinated firefighting efforts, the blaze was confined at 22:23 hours, brought under control at 23:28 hours, and fully extinguished at 23:47 hours.
The GNFS reported that the fire partially destroyed plastic materials stored in the warehouse and caused significant damage to the top floor of the building.
However, firefighters successfully salvaged the ground floor, adjoining shops, and nearby structures, preventing the fire from spreading further.
“Multiple plastic disposable materials were partially burnt, and the top floor of the warehouse was also damaged by the fire. However, firefighters successfully salvaged the ground floor, adjoining shops, and nearby structures, preventing further spread,” the GNFS stated.
The cause of the Accra fire remains unknown, with investigations currently underway.
In a separate incident, a fire outbreak at the Berekum Cinema Hall in the Bono Region caused extensive damage to property and important documents.
The fire reportedly started around 1600 hours last Friday, but a swift response from GNFS personnel helped contain the blaze before it could spread to nearby structures.
The incident caused alarm among traders and residents due to the cinema hall’s proximity to the Ghana Commercial Bank branch in Berekum.
Assistant Divisional Officer Grade Three, Ishaku Mohammed, who led the firefighting team, indicated that the fire had already intensified by the time firefighters arrived at the scene.
Despite the intensity, the team managed to bring the situation under control and prevented further destruction to surrounding shops and buildings.
The GNFS has reiterated its call for the public, especially business owners and warehouse operators, to strictly adhere to fire safety protocols to prevent similar incidents.
Investigations into both fire outbreaks are ongoing.
