LPG Cylinder Rejected In Filling Station Sparks Safety Concerns

A video circulating on social media shows a shocking moment at an LPG filling station in Ghana, where an attendant refused to refill a customer’s severely corroded gas cylinder.

In the footage, the attendant closely inspects the cylinder, which is heavily rusted with peeling metal at the top.

He clearly explains the dangers, warning that the damaged condition could lead to gas leaks or even an explosion during refilling or use, putting lives and property at serious risk.

The customer had brought the old cylinder for refilling, but the attendant stood firm on safety rules and turned it away.

This incident highlights a common problem in many Ghanaian households, where people continue using visibly worn-out cylinders to save money, often ignoring the risks. Public reactions have been strong, with many users stressing that one small leak from such a cylinder could cause a devastating fire that affects an entire family or neighborhood.

The Ghana National Fire Service and other safety bodies have repeatedly cautioned against using rusted, expired, or defective LPG cylinders. Cylinders are generally safe for about 15 years, but rust and damage weaken the metal over time.

Just yesterday, the Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company (GCMC) raised fresh alarms, revealing that nearly 30% of cylinders submitted for refurbishment under the Cylinder Recirculation Model are unfit for use.

The company’s Managing Director urged faster nationwide rollout of safety measures to protect the public.

Experts and fire officials advise Ghanaians to:
    • Check the expiry date stamped on the cylinder collar
    • Inspect for rust, dents, or leaks regularly
    • Never attempt to refill or use damaged cylinders
    • Replace old ones through authorized dealers

Safety should never be compromised for cost. A single preventable accident can lead to tragedy. Always prioritize proper maintenance and timely replacement of LPG cylinders to keep your home and loved ones safe.

An attendant at a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) filling station was left shocked after inspecting the gas cylinder a customer brought in for refilling.

He raised concerns over the poor condition of the cylinder, warning that it poses a serious risk to lives and property if used.… pic.twitter.com/Oj0Mvu3tQm
