Residents of Agavedzi in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region are urgently appealing to the government for help as powerful tidal waves continue to batter their homes and erode the coastline. Drone footage circulating on social media shows massive waves crashing directly against buildings, roads, and structures built close to the shoreline, highlighting the severe coastal erosion threatening the entire settlement.

Local voices are calling for swift government action to prevent total loss of the area. While some suggest relocating residents further inland as a practical long-term solution, others emphasize completing sea defense works to protect the ancestral homeland and livelihoods tied to fishing and coastal activities.
In response, authorities have initiated Phase II of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project (also known as the Agavedzi coastal protection project). President John Dramani Mahama performed the groundbreaking in July 2025, with construction involving 37 groins and other protective measures along an 8-kilometre stretch of coastline. The project, awarded to Amandi Holdings Limited and expected to run until around 2028-2029, aims to safeguard Agavedzi, Salakope, Amutinu, and nearby communities.
Recent updates indicate steady progress, reaching about 25% completion by early 2026, with some calming of wave impacts already observed in parts of the area.
The Volta Regional Minister and NADMO have visited affected sites, providing relief items and monitoring the situation. However, residents continue to experience ongoing threats, especially during high tide periods, raising concerns about the pace of construction amid climate change-driven erosion.
This recurring issue affects over 100 coastal communities in the Volta Region, underscoring broader challenges of sea-level rise and the need for sustainable solutions like reinforced defenses or managed relocation where necessary.
The situation in Agavedzi serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of Ghana’s shoreline communities and the importance of timely intervention to protect lives and properties.
