The father-in-law of Sammy Gyamfi, Chief Executive Officer of GOLDBOD, has died after sustaining gunshot wounds during an alleged armed robbery at his residence in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

The deceased, Mr Karikari, was reportedly attacked on Friday, 13 February 2026. Despite receiving intensive medical treatment, he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, 18 February, exactly 5 days after the attack.

Conflicting accounts have emerged about the circumstances surrounding the incident. Some reports claim that nothing was taken from the house, raising suspicion about the motive for the attack.

Other accounts suggest that Mr Karikari had travelled from Accra to Kumasi shortly before the incident, allegedly arriving with a newly acquired vehicle. It remains unclear whether the assailants believed he was carrying a substantial sum of money.

However, a separate report by Angel FM claimed that Mr Karikari had returned home from work and was opening his gate when he was shot.

According to the station, his unregistered pick-up vehicle, together with its contents, including cash, was driven away by the attackers.

The radio station further alleged that its reporters were assaulted by some family members when they visited the residence to verify the claims and report accurately on the matter.

Mr Gyamfi has since travelled to Kumasi to sympathise with his wife’s family.

Mr Karikari was the father of Irene Amankwaa Karikari, who married Mr Gyamfi in a semi-private ceremony in Accra on 21 December 2022. The event was attended by close family members and senior figures of the National Democratic Congress, including President John Dramani Mahama.

Little is publicly known about Mr Karikari, who family and friends describe as a private and reserved man.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Gyamfi family and intensified concerns about rising armed robbery cases in urban centres such as Kumasi.

Police have yet to release details about the perpetrators, and investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, the Regional Communication Officers and their deputies of the National Democratic Congress have expressed deep sorrow over Mr Karikari’s death.

In a statement dated Wednesday, 18 February 2026, and signed by Richard Ernest Kirk-Mensah, Dean of the Regional Communication Officers and Deputies, the group extended condolences to Mr Gyamfi, his wife and the entire bereaved family.

“The 16 Regional Communication Officers, Deputies, 276 Constituency Communication Officers, and distinguished communicators nationwide join in mourning this loss,” the statement said.

The group also called on the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Yohuno Tettey, to conduct an urgent investigation and ensure that those responsible are arrested and brought to justice.
