The Nalerigu Circuit Court has sentenced two men to 10 years in prison each for the unlawful possession of restricted drugs in the North East Region.

The two persons, Mumuni Iddrisu and Alhassan Braimah, were arrested along with four others on September 18, 2025, at Gbintiri near Nalerigu, after police and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) intercepted 1,195 boxes of tramadol hydrochloride 120mg, popularly called “Red.”

Investigations revealed that the two men had concealed 100 boxes of tramadol as well as over 4,500 packs of the restricted drug hidden in 25 five-litre yellow gallons.

When they reappeared in court on September 26, both Iddrisu and Braimah pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of restricted drugs without lawful authority. Four other suspects—Yakubu Muntaka, Abdulai Shakur, Mumuni Yakubu, and Moses Ayorik—were discharged after investigators found no evidence linking them to the drugs.

Presiding judge Justice Francis Asobayire sentenced the two accused to 10 years’ imprisonment on each count. They were also fined 5,000 penalty units each, equivalent to GH¢60,000. In default of payment, they will serve an additional 10 years.
